Wellman-Scofield Public Library to Participate in World’s Largest Digital Book Club

Big Library Read program allows readers around the world to borrow the eBook, A Murder in Time, Wellman Scofield Public Library announced today that it will take part in the Big Library Read, the world’s largest digital Book club through public libraries that connects millions of readers around the world with the same eBook at the same time. For a two-week period beginning June 23, Wellman-Scofield Public Library users will be able to borrow the eBook, A Murder in Time by Julie McElwain (Pegasus Books), from http://wellman.lib.overdrive.com and participate in a worldwide version of a local book club. There will be no waitlists for this popular mystery with a twist. Big Library Read is facilitated by OverDrive, the leading platform for eBooks and audiobooks from the library.

Blank Park Zoo

 A big thank you Blank Park Zoo for coming out and sharing some of their interesting animals last week!  The children had a great time learning and getting to interact with them.

Summer Reading Program: Physical Therapy

Last week, we had so much fun with Chuck Miller's presentation on preventing sports injuries.  In addition to giving some great tips on stretching, how to make homemade ice packs and heat packs, and showing us some great exercises; he also set up an obstacle course for the kids to do.  They had so much fun going through it and many went back many times to do it again.

We're Accredited!

We are so happy to announce that after a few years lull, we are once again an accredited library!  The Standards and Accreditation program exists to encourage the ongoing development o f high quality public library services in Iowa.

Iowa's voluntary public library standards program was established to give public libraries a tool to identify strengths and areas for improvement.  It is also used to document the condition of public library service in Iowa, to distribute Direct State Aid funding, and to meet statutory requirements.

Every three years, each library is asked to report its progress toward achieving accreditation by completing the application and supplying support documents to provide proof of its achievements and service standards.  A fully accredited library must meet 46 standards and an additional 16 out of 33 non-tier standards.

In addition, our library participates in the Open Access Program which opens our library to patrons outside of the Wellman area.  We also participate in the Interlibrary Loan Program, which allows our patrons to check out books from libraries across the state and other libraries to access our books for their patrons as well.

We are so happy to once again have our accreditation and will continue to strive to make our library a better place to serve our community.

The Summer Reading Program is Off and Running

We had an excellent kick of to our Summer Reading Program!  We had about sixty kids make some beautiful sun catchers during our first craft day of the summer.

We cannot wait for our first program on Thursday!  Come out to Parkside and hear Chuck Miller talk about how to prevent sports injuries.  A great program for all your active kids!
